5 Huge Hair Care Mistakes To Avoid

Some of the most common hair-related complaints that I hear from people include:

My hair just won't grow any longer!”

“My split ends are driving me crazy”

“I'm washing constantly but my scalp is still oily”

“I can't get rid of the flakes and build-up!”

01.  You're over-washing.

Yup, even if you're super oily, you shouldn't be washing once (let alone multiple times) per day. The more you wash your hair, the more you're stripping your scalp of oils and encouraging it to produce even more oil. Make sense? To help combat this issue, force yourself to go a day longer than normal without washing. Use a nontoxic dry shampoo to help yourself get by on non-wash days! Then wash with a good quality shampoo and conditioner consistently moving forward.

02.  You're brushing your hair when it's wet.

When your hair is super wet, it's susceptible to breakage. When you aggressively brush it right out of the shower, you're doing major harm. First, be sure you're only brushing with a wet brush. You can grab one on Amazon for super cheap. Next, go slow and gentle. Brush in smaller sections and avoid going too hard on your ends.

03.  It needs a little more TLC throughout the week.

Weather changes, stress, illness, childbirth and tons of other changes in our lives can cause changes in our hair health. Depending on what you (and your hair) are going through, you may just need to give your strands a little extra love. Consider incorporating an overnight hair treatment once per week, or adding a good quality leave-in conditioner to your routine. Your hair is truly the “crown you never take off” so pay attention when it's looking a little haggard or damaged.

04.  You need to exfoliate your scalp.

Build up on our scalps can cause a slew of issues for your hair. It may make it appear greasy or unwashed. Unfortunately, a lot of hair products include waxes and heavy silicones which build up on our scalps over time, and coat the hair strand. Taking the time to exfoliate each week can do wonders for your hair and scalp health. Start by incorporating a scalp scrub into your wash cycle once per week. You'll simply wash like normal, then after shampooing and before conditioning, do the scalp scrub. Its super easy and makes a big difference.

05.  You're inconsistent with the products you use.

It's like they say, “sometimes a good thing takes a little while.” Consistency with your haircare is so important. Sticking to one, quality, nontoxic brand that actually delivers you results, is how you'll achieve the hair you desire. Stick with one haircare system and reevaluate your hair's needs every few months to see which products may help further.
